Turtle rescue

On July 25, during our monitoring activity, we discovered a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in distress. The turtle was entangled in a polyester line connected to three plastic bottles, remnants of an abusive fishing gear left drifting on the surface by amateur fishers.

The line pinned the specimen around its neck and both front flippers, restricting the turtle's movements as it struggled to surface to breathe.

Assessing the emergency, we decided to act, retrieving the animal to rescue it. The plastic line was removed entirely and successfully, and the turtle was released into the sea, where it resumed swimming naturally.

During the rescue, we discovered that the turtle, a male measuring 45 cm in length and weighing 6 kg, showed signs of collision with a boat, which had deformed the back of its carapace.
