More familiar flukes were spotted in the IMMA (Important Marine Mammal Area) of Ischia and Ventontene. Meet Cartesio, who was sighted around Ischia for the first time in May 2021 as well as on September 25, 2021, and was spotted again on the 31st of May this year.
Our research team was able to recognize it by the natural marks on its tail.
Photo-identification is one of the best and non-invasive techniques cetologists use to keep a track record of cetaceans' populations and movements. Our photo-ID catalogue has served as a great tool in recognizing changes in the populations and group compositions as well as in understanding the social relations of sperm whales around Ischia and Ventotene Islands.
