We are pleased to announce a new collaboration between our association and the Isole di Ventotene e Santo Stefano Marine Protected Area for the study of cetaceans, and together the recent twinning between it and theRegno di Nettuno Marine Protected Area.
Among other things, the agreement between the two Marine Protected Areas aims to protect the underwater canyon of Cuma, critical habitat of several cetacean species and in particular the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus).
The Mediterranean sperm whale subpopulation is classified as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The waters of Ischia and Ventotene and the entire Cuma Canyon system have been recognized by the IUCN as an Important Marine Mammal Area.
