Some time ago, it was considered abundant in some parts of the basin, but today groups of sperm whales are rare.<br><br>There is no estimate of the Mediterranean population; however, the total number of individuals is likely around hundreds rather than thousands. There is no precise information on the movements and migrations of these animals in the basin. Currently, its abundance is in steep decline throughout the central and eastern Mediterranean, with the only considerable population remaining in the Alboran Sea.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-79bac00\" data-block-id=\"79bac00\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-79bac00-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-block-column--v2 stk-column stk-block stk-ebc88fb\" data-block-id=\"ebc88fb\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-ebc88fb{flex:1 1 66.7% !important}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-ebc88fb-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-ebc88fb-inner-blocks\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-a149902\" data-block-id=\"a149902\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">This dramatic, remarkable drop in abundance during the last few decades raised conservation problems for the species;
