Since 1991 the presence of seven different Mediterranean species has been recorded there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study area is known for its high pelagic biodiversity. The region has been described as a feeding site for <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/fin-whale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fin whales<\/a> (<em>Balaenoptera physalus<\/em>), a feeding and breeding site for <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/striped-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">striped dolphins<\/a> (<em>Stenella coeruleoalba<\/em>), <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/rissos-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Risso's dolphins<\/a> (<em>Grampus griseus<\/em>), <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/bottlenose-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bottlenose dolphins<\/a> (<em>Tursiops truncatus<\/em>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/sperm-whale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sperm whales<\/a> (<em>Physeter macrocephalus<\/em>). Finally, the area has been classified as a critical habitat for the Mediterranean <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/common-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common dolphin<\/a> (<em>Delphinus delphis<\/em>) in the IUCN Cetacean Action Plan. Occasional sightings of <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/pilot-whale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pilot whales<\/a> (<em>Globicephala melas<\/em>) are also recorded.<br>Since 1997, the study has focused on the Cuma Canyon, a deep submarine valley located between the islands of Ischia and Ventotene. Submarine canyons play a critical role in biological events and are often areas of high species diversity because of their oceanographic features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-5b45f41\" data-block-id=\"5b45f41\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Thanks to the data collected with the help of volunteers, in 2008 Oceanomare Delphis succeeded in including part of the canyon of Cuma (Zone D) in the boundaries of the Marine Protected Area \"Regno di Nettuno\" - islands of Ischia, Procida and Vivara. Zone D of the MPA represents a special protection area dedicated to cetaceans and the critical habitat of Mediterranean common dolphins, classified as endangered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IUCN Red List<\/a>.<br>In October 2016, during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinemammalhabitat.org\/immas\/workshops\/mediterranean-region\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first \"Important Marine Mammals Areas (IMMAs) Regional Workshop\"<\/a> for the Mediterranean organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Task Force, ODO nominated the waters of Ischia and Ventotene and the Campania and Pontine archipelagos as IMMAs. It is characterized by volcanic activity and complex geological structures, including submarine canyons, submerged mountains, erosional channels, and rocky shoals.<br><br>The waters northwest of Ischia include the submarine canyon of Cuma, known for its variety of pelagic fish, seabirds, and cetaceans. The canyon trench (850 m deep) forms an underwater valley between Ischia and Ventotene.<br><br>Southeast of Ischia, in the Gulf of Naples, the shelf is interrupted offshore by two large canyons (Magnaghi and Dohrn), which form the Magnaghi-Dohrn canyon system.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-b79e168\" id=\"obiettivi\" data-block-id=\"b79e168\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text stk-block-heading--use-theme-margins\">Goals<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-440ec0e\" data-block-id=\"440ec0e\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">The main goal of the project is to identify key areas for cetaceans. Cetaceans are photographed and identified based on natural and permanent features present on the body.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-image stk-block-image stk-block stk-e41e696\" data-block-id=\"e41e696\"><figure class=\"stk-img-wrapper stk-image--shape-stretch\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"stk-img wp-image-3312\" src=\"http:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gg_fins.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gg_fins.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gg_fins-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gg_fins-1024x563.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gg_fins-768x422.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gg_fins-1536x844.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-f302b70\" data-block-id=\"f302b70\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/sperm-whale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sperm whale<\/a><\/em>: 102 individuals photo-identified. Of these, 71 (70%) were sighted in one year only, and 31 (30%) were recaptured in different years after their initial identification.<br><br><em><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/common-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common dolphin<\/a><\/em>: 94 photo-identified individuals. 74 of the identified individuals were recaptured over the years. Of these, 24 dolphins were sighted over two to four years; 19 individuals were sighted over five to seven years; 31 showed a high degree of site fidelity as they were sighted multiple times over eight to eleven years.<br><br><em><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/rissos-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Risso's dolphin<\/a><\/em>: 43 photo-identified individuals.<br><br><em><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanomaredelphis.org\/en\/bottlenose-dolphin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bottlenose dolphin<\/a><\/em>: 204 photo-identified individuals, including 44 females. 110 individuals (including 33 females) have been re-sighted over the years.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-2067c1b\" id=\"bioacustica\" data-block-id=\"2067c1b\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text stk-block-heading--use-theme-margins\">Bioacoustic<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-44ebaa4\" data-block-id=\"44ebaa4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Cetacean detections are also conducted acoustically, listening to the sounds produced by the animals.<br>The project uses an array of stereo-towed hydrophones realized in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www-9.unipv.it\/cibra\/\" target=\"_blank\">CIBRA<\/a> laboratory (bandwidth 600 Hz \u2013 100 kHz) of the University of Pavia.<br><br>The differences in the arrival time of cetacean vocalizations on the two hydrophones allow us to localize the animals using <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pamguard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">PAMGUARD<\/a>.<br><br>The sound reproduction system installed onboard allows all participants to listen to the sounds of the sea in real-time.
